Land scarcity is severe and site areas available for hospital development is often restricted in this city, well known for its density. While some hospitals are situated in relatively flat and agreeable sites, others face the
challenges of slopes and irregularly shaped boundaries.
We have done a comparison study of three projects, with common features to illustrate salutogenic, or health-promoting designs in the given context of the challenging sites in Hong Kong. Health-promoting
designs and architectural qualities are not compromised in the design and execution of tall hospitals that result from planning constraints.
Review of the process and anticipated results of both design and construction stages of these private hospital projects provides a vivid picture of how the projects could serve their communities within
a healthy built environment. The three projects have fulfilled performance requirements, with bespoke solutions, that answer site-specific challenges.
