Greener Than Green - Cognitio College - Reimagining education through sustainable design

In collaboration with the Architectural Services Department of Hong Kong, P&T Group presents an innovative vision for educational spaces that goes far beyond traditional "green" buildings. Cognitio College is not just designed to meet environmental benchmarks—it redefines them by integrating architecture with community wellness, student engagement, and urban resilience.
Instead of the conventional 6–7 storey slab block model typical of secondary schools in Hong Kong, this project introduces a fresh, unprecedented typology. A raised podium deck on the second floor connects four building clusters via semi-open, naturally ventilated corridors. This layout breaks down the sense of compaction commonly found in dense urban campuses, opening up views, airflow, and circulation in all directions.
The design fully embraces the school’s "ECOL" concept—Environmental Proactive, Creative, Open, and Learning—by transforming the campus into a vibrant, interactive “learning park.” Exterior spaces have been carefully designed to encourage physical movement, outdoor learning, and social interaction. Grass terraces, farming areas, dynamic staircases, sitting terraces, and covered outdoor zones enrich the daily school experience while supporting mental and physical well-being.
Natural light and ventilation are prioritized through strategic massing, with most classrooms enjoying three-sided natural lighting. The architecture harnesses passive strategies including a chimney effect through the atrium, terrace planter buffers between classrooms, and cross ventilation via operable windows. Sustainability is further integrated through rainwater harvesting, the use of recycled materials, and a district cooling system.
This project is not just a response to environmental needs, but also a celebration of what educational spaces can achieve when sustainability, creativity, and human-centered design come together. It is a living, breathing example of how schools can shape not only young minds—but healthier, more connected communities.
At Cognitio College, green is more than a design choice. It’s a way of learning, living, and growing.
