A School Above the City: Designing Light, Air, and Possibility in Kowloon Bay

In the dense heart of Hong Kong, where the skyline competes with silence, and clean air is a luxury, rises a new vision for education: Kellett School, a sanctuary of learning amidst the city's noise and chaos.

Traditional school design couldn’t meet the demands of this urban reality, not in air quality, not in noise control, and not in the space children need to play and grow. So we reimagined it from the ground up, quite literally.

To overcome space constraints, we elevated the sports ground to the rooftop, creating a generous, open-air playground without sacrificing valuable indoor learning areas. A simple shift in vertical thinking unlocked a healthier, more expansive environment for physical activity.

Rather than relying on conventional open-corridor layouts, which fail to protect against pollution and urban noise, we introduced a fully enclosed, conditioned design, ensuring calm, comfortable, and protected learning spaces.

Natural daylight became a guiding principle. Generous glazing, double windows facing noisy streets, and strategically placed skylights fill classrooms and atriums with sunlight. The result is a campus that feels open, uplifting, and far from confined.

Kellett School is more than a building, it's a prototype for how we can design for wellness in high-density cities. Through thoughtful spatial planning, we reduce reliance on mechanical systems and let architecture itself do the heavy lifting.

As this new typology evolves across our upcoming projects, one thing remains clear: every child deserves a place to learn, grow, and thrive, no matter how crowded the city may be.
