As part of our P&T In Conversation With series, we are delighted to feature Kit Kong, Group Director at our Hong Kong Studio.

Kit began his journey with P&T in Singapore in 2004 before moving to Hong Kong in 2007 and since then has led award-winning projects across Hong Kong, China, and Southeast Asia. His expertise spans residential, retail, office, commercial, hospitality, mixed-use, master planning and interior design. With a strong belief that “architecture is a timeless reflection of our aspirations for a better life,” Kit has continually pushed design excellence while mentoring the next generation of architects.

In this series, Kit reflects on drawing inspiration beyond context, nurturing passion as a lifelong journey, and embracing challenges such as the award-winning Jinan Parc 66 project, contributions that embody P&T’s spirit of evolution.

  • What’s one design challenge that really shaped how you work today?

One of the most challenging aspects of design is finding inspiration. Beyond grasping the project brief, site context, development potential, and client objectives, I draw my design inspiration from feelings, which are inherently fluid and transient. Immersing myself in the project's elements, such as the site, vision, history, client, users, and environment, allows me to connect with the unseen forces at play. A deep understanding of these factors helps me channel my emotions and inspiration into my design process.

  • How do you stay creatively fueled in high-pressure projects?

I prioritize staying focused, keeping calm, and being honest about my work. It's essential for me to set achievable goals and seek ways to maximize outcomes in every situation to ensure timely delivery. Above all, I believe in doing my best and achieving the best possible results within our capabilities.

  • What’s one piece of advice you’d give to young architects today?

Cultivate your passion and remain open to self-discovery as you build your career in architecture. This lifelong journey can bring immense happiness and meaning to your life, particularly if you learn to navigate the challenges and triumphs along the way.

  • What’s one project at P&T you’ll always remember, and why?

The first project I took on after my secondment to the Hong Kong office was the Jinan Parc 66 shopping mall. It was a last-minute assignment and I had to step in at the concept stage with a tight deadline and high client expectations. Starting from scratch, I brought together a team that has been with me ever since. It was a significant challenge, but the experience was incredibly rewarding. Watching this iconic project come to life and transform into a landmark destination for both locals and visitors in Jinan was truly fulfilling. When it ultimately won multiple awards upon completion, it reinforced my belief that hard work truly brings great rewards.

  • If you could describe P&T in one word, what would it be?

For me, the word is "evolve." P&T has thrived, adapted, transformed, and excelled for over 155 years and it continues to reach for even greater heights. It is our responsibility now to carry the torch forward and I envision many more successors who will do just that in the future.

At P&T, we believe architecture is not just about buildings, but about vision, inspiration, and the people who bring them to life.
